Photoshop color question?

ok, i have photoshop 6.0, and i got it from a friend without a manual and everything i know (whch is quite a bit) has been self-taught...BUT i just cant figure out how to do the color exclusion thing. am i retarded? ill show an example at the bottom. i want to know (without using the color overlay technique) how to take a color photo, turn it black and white but leave one thing in color. HOW? am i just retarded? lol

I couldn't tell you step by step how to do it but I can see if I can help get you started. The way I would do it is by saving two copies of the same photo. Keep one with the original colors and turn the other one grayscale. You'll have to turn the grayscale one back to RGB or whatever colors you'r using again but it will still look grayscale. Then you can select the area that you want colored out the original image and drag it to the image that looks grayscale and layer it over in the right spot. It might help to reduce the opacity of the colored layer too.

Use the Lasso tool (or Quick Mask if you know how) to select around the thing you want to keep in colour. Then Inverse your Selection and Desaturate the rest of the picture.



If you have more than one thing you want to keep in colour, duplicate your Layer, Lasso around each object and delete the rest, duplicate the original Layer...and repeat. Then select the bottom (colour) Layer and Desaturate.
